Hotel Koreana was built in 1972 near Gwanghwamun and Deoksugung, at the centre of Seoul. In the 70s and 80s, Korea experienced a period of rapid modernisation and westernisation, and as a result, there was a clash in lifestyle and architectural style between old and new. There were various attempts to graft new Western styles on top of existing Korean traditions and tastes.
